St.Columba’s Church

Extension/Renovation (In progress)

NOJI Architects were first engaged by Fr. Michael Drumm and the Parishes committee board for a Church Feasibility Study which was carried out in 2018. This included the analysis of several options with regard the future of the parochial house and church.

Simultaneously, NOJI were asked to conduct a research project for the The Rosses Point Development Association with the aim of providing a detailed village strategy for Rosses point with specific strategic proposals. This took the form of the document, ‘Return to the Sea, A village strategy for Rosses Point, Co. Sligo’.

Following the Church feasibility studies, the Parish Committee Board were happy to move ahead with developing the design and planning application for the refurbishment and extension of the existing church as well as making the surrounding site more accessible. NOJI Architects were appointed as lead architects for this stage of the project in 2021.

An integrated multidisciplinary design team was assembled to help execute the project in 2023. The team included: Architectural, Conservation/Heritage, Quantity Surveying, Building Services, Civil and Structural, Environmental Consultant, Landscape design, Fire and Access and Employer’s Representative.

The brief for the church includes the addition of a new multi-use secular space, improvement of the existing church’s fabric and heating systems, and development of the external space to create a more inviting public realm and organised parking area. Our design seeks to place the new extension in its site by taking hints from the surrounding maritime context while its form is a result of the existing church.

We are currently preparing the project to submit to Sligo County Council for planning permission. We look forward to seeing this project come to life in the near future.
